Weaning Table and Chair

Here is something we are really excited about: James' weaning table and chair. It's called a weaning table because this is where James learns to start eating solid food (weaning from exclusively eating breast milk). We started using the table when James was 5 months and he needed a pillow to support himself. Now at 7 months he can sit all by himself, with an occasional slip down into the chair.

For his utensils we found a cocktail spoon at World Market. This is the perfect size for him right now. Also we got a shot glass with ridges for his cup. We read that the earlier we teach him to drink out of a cup the easier it'll be for him to use it by himself.  It only took about a month of him exploring what the cup was and now he has pretty much mastered grasping it with both hands, bringing it to his mouth, and lifting it up to drink the water.

The next step will be when James gets to be older and more mobile he can come to his table by himself when he is hungry. Then we will put out little snacks for him and he can eat by himself.

This is why James has a floor bed...

This is why James has a floor bed! In the picture he rolled from his bed to his play area after he woke up from his nap. I heard him playing in his room and went in to see him smiling at me! This is the third time this has happened and we are so excited about it.

Since he has the freedom to move about his room he can wake up on his own and instead of crying for us to come get him, he can start playing. One time I even found him all the way over by his shelf playing with the toys. Since the room is completely safe (for his stage of development now, we will make more adjustments once he can crawl and pull himself up) we feel comfortable leaving him in the room by himself and know that he will let us know when he needs company!

The next step we are excited for is when James can play in his room and then put himself to sleep on his bed when he is ready for a nap. We have a friend who says it happens with her boys so we're excited to see if it works for James!

James is 7 months old! We love his happy noises--inhales and squeaks at a high pitch! He is mastering rolling over and is just starting to sit up by himself (but topples over easily!) All of a sudden he started sleeping through the night again, what a blessing! His new routine is to go to bed around 7:30pm, wake up at 6am to eat, and then sleep again till 8:30am. We are enjoying this while it lasts!
