"Help me do it myself"

James has always been an independent guy and that hasn't changed. Now that he is getting older he insists on doing more and more things himself. Maria Montessori said the children she worked with would say, "help me do it myself." We totally see that in James...he has such a desire to learn and try things but after we help him he wants to do it by himself. We are often told, "Go away." It's endearing, at least for the moment!

He likes to take his "stool" throughout the house and turn on and off the lights, get water out of the refrigerator, wash his hands in the bathroom, and as you can see in the picture, get his own peanut butter for his toast. It's been fun to watch him assert his independence!
